BoG launches Cedi@60 celebrations today with President Mahama in Accra, aiming to strengthen confidence in Ghana’s currency.

The Bank of Ghana will today begin activities to commemorate 60 years since the introduction of the cedi, a key symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty.

The official launch of the Cedi@60 celebration takes place at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.” President John Dramani Mahama is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honor.

First issued on July 19, 1965, the cedi has seen several transformations, including reforms and redesigns, reflecting the country’s economic journey and resilience through the years.

The Bank of Ghana says the Cedi@60 celebration will serve as both a reflection on the nation’s monetary history and a platform to renew confidence in the cedi as a foundation of stability and national identity.

The year-long activities will include regional roadshows, public education on clean currency handling and security features, and youth contests in art, music, and essays aimed at deepening appreciation of the cedi’s importance.

A key feature of the anniversary program will be a Currency Conference that will bring together global financial experts, academics, and policymakers to discuss Ghana’s monetary development and future direction.

The Bank notes that the commemoration seeks to inspire public trust and collective responsibility toward safeguarding the integrity and value of the cedi for generations to come.
