Dr. Dominic Ayine, Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, has clarified that the stringent bail conditions imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on individuals — including former government appointees — are determined by the gravity of the alleged offences.
He made this remark in response to concerns raised by MP Habib Iddrisu (NPP, Tolon), who argued that some of the bail terms were unreasonably high.
Dr. Ayine emphasized that EOCO’s bail conditions are fully aligned with Ghanaian law. He also noted that those who feel the bail is too harsh can apply to the courts to have the conditions reduced. According to him, these measures are necessary to ensure that suspects do not flee and remain within the country to face trial.
He also pointed out that EOCO is currently prosecuting a number of former government officials over alleged financial misconduct, underlining that the office is enforcing strict bail provisions as part of its broader investigative and enforcement mandate.
