Walewale MP Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama warns that delaying the appointment of a Defence Minister sends a wrong signal about government leadership.

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has voiced concern over the extended delay in naming a new Minister for Defence, saying the omission sends an unfavourable message about the government’s decisiveness.
Speaking on the AM Show, the MP urged the President to place national security and the public interest above internal party disputes. He suggested that efforts by influential figures within the party to steer or stall the appointment may be causing the holdup. “Ultimately,” he emphasised, “the key priority must be the welfare of the good people of Ghana.”
His remarks come on the heels of criticism from the MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who accused President John Dramani Mahama of showing “irresponsible delay” in filling the Defence Minister role nearly three months after the death of the previous minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah.
While acknowledging that the President may be acting with caution to preserve party harmony and avert internal conflict, the Walewale MP stressed that governance should not be put on hold. He reminded that the President’s oath is to the state rather than to any political faction. He added that Parliament is ready to approve any suitably qualified nominee. Moreover, he warned that further postponement risks reinforcing public perception of weak leadership.
