Commercial drivers working on the Adidome–Juapong road in the Central and North Tongu districts have threatened to strike in protest of the sharp increase in unauthorized speed ramps along the route.

Their planned strike was called off after Mr. Guggisberg Fiagbenu, Assembly Member for the Adidome Central Electoral Area and Chairman of the Adidome–Juapong Transport Union, intervened.

In a statement, Mr. Fiagbenu warned that the illegal ramps pose a serious threat to road safety and hinder the smooth flow of traffic.  He said the drivers had initially resolved to stop working on Wednesday unless the unauthorized ramps were removed immediately.

Following his intervention, the drivers suspended their strike after being assured that relevant authorities would address their demands.

Mr. Fiagbenu appealed directly to the Ghana Highway Authority and other bodies to clear the illegal speed bumps as a matter of urgency.  He also cautioned residents and local communities against building ramps without official approval, arguing that such actions compromise not only safety but also transport efficiency.

Some of the drivers, speaking to the Ghana News Agency, thanked Mr. Fiagbenu for stepping in, but stressed that they could still call off services if no concrete action is taken soon.

“We spend a lot on vehicle maintenance because of these ramps. It’s becoming unbearable. Those who patronise our services also decry some health challenges after alighting at their destinations. We need the roads fixed and those unauthorized speed ramps removed immediately,” some drivers said.

Mr. Fiagbenu also called on the Volta Regional Minister, and the Chief Executives of the Central and North Tongu Districts, to press authorities to act swiftly and prevent future unrest.
